17. Sylvia Lewis – Clothesline Basket Evening
These bowls are fun to make. Using cotton clothesline cord (not the plastic stuff) you wrap fabric around the cord and then sew them together using your zigzag on the machine. Beaded trim can be added to the top edge for a bit of elegance.
Skill Level: All Pattern Fee: none Zigzag capable machine Walking Foot (if you have one) BSK
Supplies: Cotton clothesline cord. I have found suitable clothesline cord at the Family Dollar store. It was less than $5 for 100 feet. Which would make several bowls. If you can’t find any, I will have some available in class. The vinyl covered clothesline will NOT work for this project. Glue stick Fabric to wrap your line. For a small bowl, ½ yard should be plenty. You can use leftover strips for a scrappy basket if you like. You do not need to sew the strips together. If you use a batik, you don’t need to cut off the selvages. Cut into about ¾” strips. Accuracy in cutting is NOT important. And if you use FQ’s, don’t worry about the strips being shorter. It won’t affect the end product Thread. Decide whether you want it to accent or to blend. You will need a bobbin wound with the same thread. You can use several colors or variegated threads if you like. It doesn’t hurt to bring a couple of options. If you like, you can decorate the top edge with beaded trims, braids, fancy cording or whatever suits the theme of your bowl. Some spring-loaded clothespins or binding clips. I will have some available for use during class if you don’t have any.
