Half Day

Do you have focus fabric scraps from a BQ that are lovingly stashed away? Or a gorgeous big floral yardage that was too small an amount to really do anything with, but it followed you home? Let me show you what I have done with the leftovers from my leftovers (yep, it’s the third quilt!). Learn how to balance, brighten and illuminate with scraps from your stash. Create a work of art that can control the viewer’s eye as well as tickle your own fancy as you make it. When Grandma used the chicken feed sacks to make her quilts she used to say, nothing should be wasted-they even used the oink from the pig. Well, that is what we do with this quilt.

Supply List :

12 ½ in sq. block ruler, 6 ½ in. sq. block ruler, 2 ½ x 18 or longer ruler and a small 2 ½ ruler and/or 2 ½ in. sq. block ruler if you have one.

Neutral thread or matching the major fabric.

Something for a design wall approx. 48 x 60 or larger

Fabric Requirements :

Minimum of 3 - 12 ½ inch squares and 6 - 6 ½ inch squares of a multi- colored focus fabric (the larger the print the better). If you have enough scrap to get a few 6 ½ x 12 ½ inch pieces they work in great. Take the remainders of the focus fabric and cut it into 2 ½ in. strips of any length that you can get. We will do the final cuts in class. If you have any companion print scraps, make 2 ½ in. strips and possibly a couple 6 ½ in. squares. Look carefully at the colors in your focus fabric. If you can, find a solid match for the background fabric and cut 2 ½ in. strips. Last find solids or marbled to match some of the other colors in the focus fabric and add some lighter and darker values of these colors as well. These value changes add luminosity. Cut these into 2 ½ in. strips. Bring lots of imagination, a will to experiment and some color confidence or just come to have fun and take some of these home.
